Audition for SwingShift Singers

Auditions for SwingShift are held twice annually. In August for Fall Semester (September–December) and again in January for Spring Semester (February–May). Spring rehearsals begin Wednesday, February 7, 2007, from 3:30-5:30 pm, and continue every Wednesday until the concert in May. We currently rehearse in Eagle Mountain, Utah, (west of Lehi, near Redwood Road) and will continue there until we relocate to Lindon, Utah (between Orem and Pleasant Grove), probably sometime in the summer of 2007.

Auditions for the SwingShift 2007 Spring Semester

Auditions will be held by appointment, during the week of January 8–13, 2007.

To audition, please contact me (the director) to set up an individual time. If you have specific concerns (or fears!) about the audition, please don't hesitate to call!

For the audition, please be prepared to:

  1. Sing the song of your choice either a cappella or with accompaniment. If you would like an accompaniment, please bring an accompanist (piano will be provided) or a recorded accompaniment with playing device. Please do not bring music with another singer on the track.
  2. Learn a line or two from a new song and sing it the best you can.
  3. Learn a few measures of a new dance and dance it the best you can.
  4. Demonstrate your ability to sight sing a few lines, the best you can.
  5. Review the choir requirements (below) and sign a page acknowledging that you have read and agree to them.

Requirements

Each SwingShift member must:

  1. Be a girl at least 12 years old by September 1, 2006. (No exceptions.)
  2. Have good pitch!
  3. Read music on her own, treble clef.
  4. Be able to mimic simple dance moves in a reasonable time.
  5. Commit to rehearsing at home for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. (Singers will be expected to come to rehearsal already knowing words and their part of assigned songs.)
  6. Love to sing. (That means the teen loves to sing—not that mom would love to have the teen sing!)
  7. Be punctual! (Late arrivals will be considered half an absence.)
  8. Be polite, kind, friendly, and encouraging to others.
  9. Attend at least 80% of rehearsals.
  10. Arrange to meet with another choir member to learn missed material before the next rehearsal.
  11. Have a parent who agrees to check their email regularly for notices.
  12. Purchase her own sheet music in a timely manner. (Singers will only be allowed to perform songs for which they own a copy of the music.)
  13. Purchase her own choir costume which consists of one dress, one pair of shoes, one pair of pantyhose. Last year the cost was about $150. (This costume is very specific and will be used year after year for as long as we can stand them.)
  14. Agree to full concert dress for performances (costume, stage makeup, no jewelry, big hair).
  15. Be available to perform on a regular basis and attend 90% of performances (generally in Utah and Salt Lake Counties). In other words, make choir a priority. We will not perform on Sundays or Monday nights, but may well perform any other day/time.
  16. Commit to attend our semester end dress rehearsals and concerts in December and May. Spring 2007 dates are May 1 and 3.
  17. Agree to family participation (as per below).
  18. Pay dues of $10.00 per month on the first rehearsal of each month.

Family Participation

In order to keep costs so low, we ask that each family contribute to the success of the choir in some manner. Below are some of the choir needs. We appreciate your help in these areas. Suggestions are welcome!

  • Performance Liaison:
This person is in charge of finding appropriate performance opportunities for the choir. Each semester culminates with a final concert. This position will also involve finding a local venue that is free or nearly free. We need a stage, seating, and a sound system.
  • Child care coordinator:
I have two boys (ages 6 and 3) who need supervision. I need someone to supervise and play with them in my home during weekly rehearsals.
  • Music coordinator:
This person would be in charge of ordering, distributing, and tracking the music that members need. She would also collect monies for the orders and ensure that each member has appropriately purchased all necessary music (so that we are legal).
  • Public Relations:
This position involves advertising our performances and generally making the public aware that we exist, creating posters, fliers, etc.
  • Attendance Coordinator:
This person would take roll at each rehearsal and concert and also collect and keep an accounting of monthly dues, commitment forms, etc.
  • Communications:
This position involves contacting any members who are unable to access email or who need emergency communication and forwarding my communications to them by phone.
